Human-Centered AI and the Digital Humanities: Developing a Proposed AI Literacy Minor at Salem College

Abstract

This paper discusses the author’s work in an Honors Independent Study through which she helped plan and develop the curriculum for a proposed minor in AI Literacy on the Salem College campus. This work represents the culmination of more than 12 months' worth of research on AI, student writing, and ethics, all of which are interwoven throughout the proposed curriculum. The urgent need to provide AI literacy through the humanities is especially highlighted and contextualized within existing calls for Explainable AI (XAI) and Fairness, Accountability, Transparency, and Ethics (FATE) in AI that will help future leaders ensure that emerging technologies and their applications remain human-centered and are constantly interrogated.
