Abstract

Where do non-U.S. residents—particularly those not born in the United States—experience discrimination and mistreatment in its many forms? Challenges can occur anywhere, including workplaces, housing, educational environments, and community life. Such experiences often create significant barriers, including cultural misunderstandings and a lack of meaningful community support. The result is not only exclusion, but also reduced well-being, limited opportunities, and weakened social connection. In many cases, community spaces and services are not intentionally designed to promote full inclusion, affirm cultural identity, or foster belonging for non-U.S. residents, leaving many without the tools needed to maintain connection and stability.

HAVEN is a Multicultural Community Building that enables non-USA residents to connect, affirm their cultural identities, share knowledge and resources, and engage in mutual support. The end goal is to create a design solution that transforms the experience of non-USA residents from isolation and invisibility to one of connection, agency and community-building. This proposal is supported through intentional design strategies, including curved pathways that encourage flow and interaction, the integration of natural elements to promote comfort and well-being, and a neutral color palette that fosters inclusivity and calm.

This project holds deep personal meaning for me because I have witnessed the challenges of immigrant life through my family's experiences and children. Watching them navigate a new culture, language, and environment revealed how isolating and difficult it can be to feel a sense of belonging. These challenges are often faced in silence, as many hesitate to ask for help out of fear.
