Stripping Down Corporate Women’s Portfolios

Abstract

This presentation will explore how Roland Barthes’ analysis of the practice of French striptease as a semiotic performance can be used in corporate women’s portfolios as a gendered performance. I argue that within this semiotic performance analysis of portfolios, gender roles and expectations among women in professional fields correlate to Barthes idea of an “object in disguise,” which is interpreted as a woman's true identity, masked or tweaked to appear as something different. (Barthes 84). I will end the presentation with a discussion of a rulebook of best practices for creating portfolios, based on my analysis of Barthes.
