Design Beyond Roots

Abstract

The central ideas guiding my project are social justice, safe spaces for people with different cultural backgrounds, and inclusivity. I will never see in my lifetime full social justice due to systematic racism and ignorance, but I can try to do something about it!

I want to create a space for healing and empowerment!

The healing component of this project is closely connected to a mock website I created, Roots and Resilience. Roots and Resilience is a platform designed to help people of color access culturally specific resources that support connection, empowerment, and problem-solving within their communities.

The empowerment part of this project involves creating a trusted and safe place where people of color can come together, build community, and engage in collective healing! Biophilic design and natural elements are a big part of this place! The design incorporates natural lighting through large windows, paired with warm, earthy color tones to create a safe and welcoming atmosphere. The space will also feature abundant greenery, including large plants such as banana plants and monster deliciosas, as well as hanging plants throughout the interior. In addition, the layout emphasizes an open-concept design while still providing private office spaces to support focus and confidentiality.
