The Arrow She Holds

Abstract

The Arrow She Holds is a practice-based research project that examines the symbolic and embodied significance of the arrow as a metaphor for faith, resilience, and forward movement in early adulthood. Originating from a plexiglass print created in an advanced printmaking course, the image of the artist as a liturgical dancer holding an arrow becomes both self-portrait and spiritual framework. The project investigates how gesture, directional movement, and repetition across printmaking and mixed media processes communicate internal reflection, recovery, and personal transformation.

Drawing conceptual influence from the expressive dynamism of Vincent van Gogh and the compositional intentionality of Leonardo da Vinci, the work considers how line, motion, and direction can visually embody perseverance and devotion. The arrow functions as a recurring motif representing challenge, growth, and the continual act of choosing to move forward with faith. Engagement with the Beauty further frames the inquiry, situating beauty as both a personal and relational experience shaped by perception, spirituality, and self-regard.

Through the integration of dance, visual art, and spiritual reflection, this thesis proposes that creative practice can serve as a site of renewal and affirmation. The work aims to cultivate a contemplative viewing space in which audiences are invited to reflect on their own inner strength, beauty, and capacity for forward movement.
